Get Ready to Enjoy KC’s Fountains Again | News
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City’s 47 public fountains are coming to life for the spring and summer of 2012, starting Tuesday, April 10.
The fountains will be turned on after a traditional, annual ceremony, which will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Marlborough Plaza Fountain, 79th & The Paseo.
The Marlborough Plaza Fountain was purchased by real estate developer J. C. Nichols in Venice, Italy in 1922. He gave it to the City of Kansas City, Missouri. In 1923, the fountain was placed on a traffic island on the edge of Nichols’ new development – the Country Club Plaza. It remained on the Plaza until 1968 when it was moved to its present location. It recently completed a renovation.
The City of Kansas City, Missouri Parks and Recreation Department operates and maintains 47 fountains, 87 ornamental structures, 27 lakes, 50 miles of trails and bikeways, as well as parkland, tennis courts and golf courses and 12,000 acres of parkland.
