Bring your brainy buddies to museum trivia contest

Download what's stored in your memory banks and team up for the Excelsior Springs Museum & Archives Friday, April 1 benefit trivia contest. It will be held at the Excelsior Springs Golf Course Clubhouse,  1201 E. Golf Hill Drive.  

Bring your brain power and your pursuit of trivia for an evening of fun, food and prizes. Sound tricky? This is no April fool. Without a tax base, the museum continually searches for unique fundraising events to bolster the bottom line since the institution runs on volunteer help, donations and gifts. So, choose some of your chums or just yourself and tackle some brain-teasing challenges for the coveted first place crown. Contest begins at 7 p.m.

Parkville American Legion Auxiliary Hosting April 2 Rummage Sale

Parkville American Legion Auxiliary, Post 318, hosts the annual rummage sale April 2 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Legion Hall, 11 Main Street, in downtown Parkville, MO.

Funds raised by the Auxiliary are used to support local youth and community programs, as well as to assist veterans and active duty military and their families. Youth programs supported include scholarships and Missouri Girls’ State, while local programs include donations to the Parkville Food Pantry.

Veterans’ assistance includes donating funds to purchase Christmas gifts for patients in the Veterans Administration hospitals in Kansas City and Leavenworth and in the VA home in Cameron and toward purchase of a van for the VA home. Recent funding for active duty military personnel included donations for the Wounded Warriors Fishing Tournament and gift cards for an area National Guard unit returning from deployment.

Bridging the possibilities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities

The Broadway Bridge Run is a 10K Run, 5K Run/Walk and Family Fun Run. The run starts at City Market, goes across the Broadway Bridge, winds around the downtown airport and back again.

Chip and electronic timing is used to award prizes to Overall Male Finisher, Overall Female Finisher and the top three finishers in each of the 13 age divisions.  

In 2010, the Broadway Bridge Run raised more than $55,000. This event is open for anyone to participate, and is hosted by the Kansas City Missouri Police Department as a project of the Law Enforcement Torch Run®.

Park University to Host Summer Coterie Theatre Classes

Park University to Host Summer Coterie Theatre Classes

Children will take the stage this summer when Park University partners with the Coterie Theatre to offer drama and acting classes at the University’s Parkville Campus. Week-long summer camps for children entering kindergarten through 12th grade are scheduled for June 6 through June 24.

This is the first time the Coterie School for Theatre Exploration will partner with Park to offer summer classes. In the Coterie’s classes, professional teaching artists use games, improvisations, acting exercises and scene work to help young actors discover what it means to respond truthfully and believably. In drama classes for younger students, actors flex their imaginations through games, visual arts, music and improvisation.

You won’t want to miss the “Over the Rainbow Auction Gala XXII” as we raise funds during a groovy evening of “FLOWER POWER – Peace, Love & Rainbows” on April 9, 2011 at Riverport Landing (property of Cerner). Our signature event, lead by 2011 co-chairs Joy Hobick and Lydia Jeter, provides operational support for our very unique programming for children and adults with developmental disabilities such as; Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome and behavioral challenges.

Over 400 guests will attend this exciting evening, eager to bid in both the silent and live auctions from hundreds of different items! Our auction includes far out merchandise, art, entertainment certificates, travel packages and collectibles. Last year our auction gala raised over $125,000.00! All proceeds benefit the children and adults with disabilities who attend Rainbow Center and Rainbow Options.
